Spirits Packaging:
Crafting Unique Experiences for Distillers

INTRODUCTION
If you think about it, spirits packaging is more than just a box; it is an art form that tells the story of an alcoholic beverage long before it touches your lips. In the spirits industry, the box not only serves to protect the bottle inside but also acts as an ambassador for the brand, appealing to consumers’ senses. Arkay’s extensive experience creating luxury packaging includes high-end spirits. To that end we will dive into the world of spirits and learn more about the relevance and importance of custom boxes.
Unseen Is Unsold
High-quality liquor packaging can significantly influence consumer choices. Attractive and functional cartons enhance the perceived value of the product and differentiate brands on crowded shelves. For distillers, investing in innovative and sustainable product packaging solutions can lead to higher sales and stronger customer loyalty.
In 2018, a survey showed that 72% of consumers consider packaging design to be a key factor in their purchase decision. For gift purchases it becomes even more important with 81% agreeing that package design influences their decision. This statistic underlines why brands must prioritize effective design to stay competitive.

Key Facts & Concepts in Alcoholic Beverage Packaging
When considering custom spirits packaging, various elements contribute to a successful design:
- Materials: The finest board must be used at the exact weight that is best to contain and protect the bottle. Arkay uses Sappi board, as well as Invercote and SBS. When our customers want board that is exceptionally recyclable, we turn to Monadnock Paper Mills for their Astrolite and Kona products.
- Custom Design: Unique shapes or prints can enhance brand recognition and appeal. Knowing this, we developed Paint on Press® to assist brands with one-of-a-kind designs, including color, shape, and texture.
- Sustainability: Brands are increasingly opting for sustainable packaging solutions that reduce environmental impact while meeting consumer preferences. Arkay supplier Monadnock Paper Mills produces Kona (a blend of fiber from reclaimed coffee bean bags and Forest Stewardship Council™ certified post-consumer waste) and Astrolite (Forest Stewardship Council™ certified paper).
This kind of “green’’ packaging is gaining importance as consumers become more environmentally conscious. We work with alcoholic beverage brands to meet their customer’s ecological requirements without sacrificing aesthetics or design.
- Limited Edition Releases: Distillers often use special boxes for limited edition spirits to create exclusivity and desire. These limited releases can actually become collectibles, highlighting a brand’s exclusivity and craftsmanship. See the example of Westerhall Estate XXO Rum below.
- Trends: Understanding current trends helps manufacturers stay ahead in the competitive spirits market. Key trends include sustainability, personalization, and technology integration.
Common Misconceptions About Spirits Packaging
A common misconception is that spirits packaging is merely functional. In reality, it plays a vital role in brand storytelling. Many consumers assume that all bottled spirits are created equal; however, as Arkay artisans know, the careful selection of materials, designs, and branding can greatly influence perception and desirability.
Another misconception is that sustainable packaging options are less appealing or lower quality. However, many brands are now producing luxurious-looking boxes from recycled materials or using minimalist designs that resonate with eco-conscious consumers.
Best Practices for Spirits & Liquors
Here are some expert tips for alcoholic beverage producers who want to improve their spirits packaging:
- Emphasize Your Brand Story: Use your packaging design to convey your brand’s history and values. This emotional connection can resonate deeply with consumers.
- Invest in Quality: High-quality materials communicate premium quality products. Your customers will feel the difference. Custom design elements, such as embossing (which adds texture and elegance, enhancing both visual and tactile appeal), contribute significantly to a spirit’s shelf appeal. These techniques help brands differentiate their products in a crowded market.
- Test A/B Designs: Don’t hesitate to experiment with different designs and colors to see what captures your audience’s attention best.
- Sustainable Choices Matter: Consider eco-friendly options that appeal to modern consumers who prioritize sustainability.
Successful Case Studies for Alcoholic Beverages
- Clarke’s Court: One of the largest and best known rum distilleries in Grenada, Clarke’s Court has been in operation since 1937, but it was still not that well-known in the United States, so they needed a box that would convey their international relevance. Arkay used Sappi board, Cold Foil, 4 Color Process, 1 Spot Color, UV Gloss Coating, UV Matte Coating, Embossing, and Debossing, and produced a gorgeous box for Clarke’s Court that showed off its high-end brand while being protective of the contents inside.
- Courage & Conviction: Located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, this American Single Malt Whisky needed a custom box that was true to its roots, and made in America. Arkay’s facility is located in the Roanoke Valley in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, an inspiration for the production of Courage & Conviction. We used SBS board, Cold Foil, 4 Spot Colors, UV Matte Coating, and UV Gloss Coating to produce a box with simplicity and a luxurious touch, feel, and appearance — a perfect complement to the distinctive bottle within.
- Walker’s Deluxe Bourbon Whisky: Established in 1858, Hiram Walker’s was a respected brand of whisky for 123 years. It was sold and went through a variety of owners, surviving as an expensive and sought after brand today. Arkay boxed it with its history in mind, creating an elegant look and a tactile experience that captured attention and encouraged devotion to this distinguished brand.
- Westerhall Estate XXO Rum: Westerhall Estate XXO is a blend of Caribbean matured rums distilled in Grenada and aged for 23 years. To celebrate Grenada’s 50 years of independence, the brand released a commemorative bottle of XXO Rum. For the limited edition box, we used Sappi board, Cold Foil, 4 Spot Colors (with 2 hits of black included), UV Matte Coating, Gloss Varnish, UV Gloss Coating, and Embossing – all working together to create a sleek, gorgeous box that communicates sophistication and style..
Beyond aesthetics, these brands have successfully leveraged their packaging as part of their marketing strategy, aligning their visual identity with customer expectations.
Conclusion
In conclusion, effective spirits packaging is a multifaceted approach combining aesthetics, functionality, and sustainability. By prioritizing high-quality materials, extraordinary designs, and sustainable practices, distillers are not only meeting consumer needs but also enhancing brand loyalty. So whether you’re an established company or a budding distillery, investing in thoughtful packaging for your high-end spirits can make all the difference in today’s market.
