That distinction decides who you appoint, and who holds your color standard between runs. We manufacture the folding carton, to an agreed specification and a documented standard, scheduled against your release calendar.

You hold the specification. The die line, substrate, and approved color standard sit with you and with us, documented rather than remembered, so a change gets made against a record instead of a recollection.

Color is measured, not remembered. G7 color management means every run is approved against a documented standard held here. Reorders are measured against that reference rather than against the previous delivery, so small shifts do not compound across releases.

Components are made upstream. Five suppliers sit behind a finished pack:

◦ Primary packaging, appointed separately. Bottles, tubes, jars, closures, droppers, pumps.

◦ Folding cartons, and this is Arkay. The printed secondary carton.

◦ Inserts, appointed separately. Foam inserts, thermoformed trays, molded pulp.

◦ Contract packager or co-packer, appointed separately. Filling, labeling, cartoning, assembly, kitting.

◦ Corrugated, appointed separately. Shippers, outer cases, transit packaging.‍

What We Manufacture Under Contract

Contract folding carton manufacturing is an ongoing commitment rather than a single purchase order: an agreed specification, a documented color standard, and production scheduled against your release calendar. Everything runs offset with in-house finishing on the same press pass, which is covered in more detail in our guide to the packaging production process.

Printing and finishing

Offset printing on SBS paperboard, with foil stamping, embossing and debossing, and inline flexo specialty coating for pearlescent, gold and silver effects. Paint on Press, our proprietary process, supports variant programs without a separate setup per version. We are not a digital print house and we do not print flexo, though we do coat flexo inline.

Structural design and prototyping

Die-line development and structural design from our design studio in Hauppauge, New York, with physical mock-ups produced in as little as one week from concept. Early enough to change a decision rather than confirm one, which matters most when a carton has to arrive at someone else's fill line in a specific case count and pallet configuration.

Where the Specification Discipline Comes From

Arkay has manufactured folding cartons since 1922, across four generations of family ownership, for prestige beauty houses, luxury spirits programs and premium consumer brands. Every one of those cartons was filled somewhere else, so holding an approved standard across reorders and handoffs is ordinary work here rather than a special arrangement. What is contract packaging?
Contract packaging, also called co-packing, is the outsourcing of packaging operations to a third party. A contract packager takes a product that already exists and fills, labels, assembles, or kits it. The industry trade body is the Contract Packaging Association, which describes itself as the resource for the co-manufacturing and co-packing industry. Contract packaging is a service performed on a finished product, distinct from manufacturing the packaging components themselves.
Does my co-packer make my packaging, or do I buy it separately?
In most cases your co-packer does not make your packaging. A co-packer fills and finishes your product, then either sources components on your behalf or receives components you have bought direct. Folding cartons, bottles, tubes, closures, inserts, and corrugated shippers are each made by different specialist manufacturers. If your co-packer is sourcing your cartons, they are buying them from a folding carton manufacturer and passing them on to you.
Can I buy my folding cartons direct and have them delivered to my co-packer or contract manufacturer?
Yes, and it is the normal arrangement. Arkay ships finished cartons directly to the contract manufacturer or co-packer you nominate, on your behalf. Run-to-run consistency comes from the approved color standard being held by the manufacturer who set it, so every run is measured against the same reference rather than against the previous delivery. What you coordinate is delivery timing against the fill schedule, case counts and pallet configuration, and who signs off the first article.
Is contract manufacturing risky?
The risk is rarely the work itself. It is the number of parties who can each change something. When the specification, the color standard, and the production schedule sit with different suppliers, nobody owns the outcome and small variances compound across releases. The practical mitigation is to keep each component with the manufacturer that made it and hold the standard there, so every run is measured against a fixed reference rather than against the last delivery.
When should brands use contract packaging services?
Contract packaging makes sense when filling is not your core capability, when volume is seasonal enough that owning a line is inefficient, when you need a regulated filling environment, or when you are launching into a format your current operation cannot run. Using a co-packer is a normal and often correct decision. It does not change who manufactures your carton. You still need a folding carton manufacturer, and you can appoint one directly.
