What Is Soft-Touch Lamination?

Soft-touch lamination is a surface finishing process that bonds a thin thermoplastic film to a printed sheet. The film is usually BOPP, biaxially oriented polypropylene, and occasionally PET where dimensional stability matters more. It is applied in a separate pass after printing, using heat and pressure to bond the film across the full sheet.

The feel comes from the film itself. Its outer face carries a microscopic matte pile, a texture fine enough that the eye reads it as a flat surface while the hand reads it as suede. That is worth stating plainly because it is often misunderstood: soft-touch is not a chemical softness or a rubberized layer. It is surface topography at a scale below what the eye resolves. Packaging films of this type are typically supplied in gauges from 15 to 25 micron.

Soft-touch coating reaches a comparable destination by a different route. A water-based aqueous coating carrying suspended particles is applied inline on the offset press, as the final station in the press tower, metered by an anilox roller and dried with infrared heat and forced air in the same pass as printing. The particles form the microscopic texture as the coating dries. There is no separate machine pass and no plastic layer. One route bonds a film. The other builds texture into a coating. Almost every downstream difference follows from that, and this article is a straight comparison of the two for anyone specifying a folding carton.

What Soft-Touch Lamination Does

The benefits brands specify soft-touch lamination for come down to four surface properties.

  • Surface texture. The film’s engineered pile produces a tactile depth sometimes described as peach skin. A coating produces a comparable velvety surface with slightly less depth.
  • Moisture barrier. The bonded film blocks moisture. Aqueous coatings provide light resistance for normal retail handling but are not a barrier.
  • Abrasion resistance. The film resists scuffing better than a coating over long transit or repeated handling.
  • Added stiffness. The film contributes rigidity, which can make a lighter substrate present as more substantial than its caliper alone would suggest.

The polymer load tells the same story from a different angle: aqueous coatings apply roughly 6 g/m² of polymer against 15 to 30 g/m² for PE and PLA laminates, between 2.5 and 5 times less polymer per carton (Origin Sustainables; Verive.eu). Fold integrity. A folding carton has to fold, and film works against that. The bonded layer adds stiffness, and thicker gauges reduce folding capability further, a point film suppliers themselves make when recommending heavier films for items that fold minimally or not at all. On a scored carton the film has to survive the crease without cracking, lifting, or showing a whitened line, and the interaction depends on the caliper underneath it. Fingerprints and scuffing. Soft-touch surfaces hold body oils and show marks, and the effect is worst over heavy dark coverage. This is true of both the film and the coating, and it is the most common complaint we hear after a soft-touch launch. Film marketing frequently claims the opposite. Brands are better served planning around it: keep full-bleed dark panels out of high-contact zones, or restrict the soft-touch surface to areas the hand does not grip.

An extra pass. Lamination happens offline, after printing. That means additional handling, additional lead time, and a material cost repeated across every sheet in the run. Inline coating adds no separate step. On a long run, that difference compounds.

The decision principle is simpler than the table suggests. For a folding carton that has to fold cleanly and stay in the paper stream, the coating route wins, and the difference in feel between the two is far smaller than the difference in recyclability. Where a functional moisture barrier or heavy transit protection is the actual requirement, that is a different specification problem, and often a different format.

These are confused constantly, and the confusion costs money.

Matte is a visual property. It describes low sheen, a surface that does not reflect specular light. Soft-touch is a tactile property. It describes a surface that feels like suede.

A matte laminate looks flat and feels conventionally smooth. A soft-touch laminate looks flat and feels textured. Under a proof or on screen, the two are nearly indistinguishable, because the difference lives entirely in the hand. Brands reviewing digital proofs regularly approve matte when they intended soft-touch, then discover the gap on the first production run.

The fix is unglamorous and reliable: handle both before specifying. A physical mock-up resolves in ten seconds what a proof cannot communicate at all.

Where Soft-Touch Lamination Still Gets Specified

For completeness, these are the cases where a laminated film is still the answer. Three of the four sit outside folding carton work altogether, which is worth noticing, because it explains most of the picture.

1. Non-Folding Formats

Rigid boxes, set-up boxes, and sleeves that never crease remove the fold-integrity problem entirely. Without a score line to survive, the film’s stiffness stops being a liability. These are rigid formats rather than folding cartons.

2. Functional Moisture Barrier Requirements

If the pack faces humidity, refrigeration, or condensation, a coating’s light resistance is not enough. This is a functional requirement and should be specified as one rather than debated as a finish preference.

3. Heavy Transit Exposure

Where a pack is the shipping surface and travels with minimal protection, film protects the printed surface better than a coating does. For a secondary folding carton that ships inside an outer shipper, this rarely applies.

4. Formats Where Recyclability Is Not a Constraint

Where a program has no retailer recyclability requirement and no internal ESG target attached to the packaging, the recyclability trade-off carries less weight in the decision.

Outside those cases, and for premium folding cartons in particular, soft-touch aqueous coating is the better specification: the same tactile category, without the recyclability, fold, color, and lead-time costs.

Relief the fingertips locate before the eye reads anything, at no cost to recyclability.
